Losing someone we love is one of life's hardest tests. These duas from the Sunnah help us pray for the deceased, comfort their family and remember our own return to Allah. The details of how the funeral prayer is performed differ slightly between schools of thought, so follow your local imam for the method; the duas below are authentic and agreed upon.

TransliterationLā ilāha illallāh.
EnglishGently remind the dying person to say La ilaha illallah. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said whoever's last words are La ilaha illallah will enter Paradise.
Roman UrduQareeb-ul-marg shakhs ko narmi se La ilaha illallah ki yaad dilayein. Nabi ﷺ ne farmaya jis ka aakhri kalaam La ilaha illallah ho woh jannat mein daakhil hoga.
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَاخْلُفْ لِي خَيْراً مِنْهَا
TransliterationInnā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji`ūn. Allāhumma'jurnī fī muṣībatī wakhluf lī khayran minhā.
EnglishWe belong to Allah and to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me for my loss and replace it with something better.
Roman UrduHum Allah hi ke hain aur Usi ki taraf laut kar jaane wale hain. Ae Allah, mujhe meri museebat mein ajr de aur mujhe is ke badle mein is se behtar ata farma.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِفلان (باسمه) وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ في المَهْدِيين ، وَاخْلُفْهُ في عَقِبِهِ في الغابِرين، وَاغْفِرْ لَنا وَلَهُ يا رَبَّ العالَمين، وَافْسَحْ لَهُ في قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فيه
TransliterationAllāhummaghfir li (name), warfa` darajatahū fil-mahdiyyīn, wakhlufhu fī `aqibihī fil-ghābirīn, waghfir lanā wa lahū yā rabbal-`ālamīn, wafsaḥ lahū fī qabrihī wa nawwir lahū fīh.
EnglishO Allah, forgive (name) and raise their rank among the guided. Take care of the family they leave behind. Forgive us and them, O Lord of the worlds. Make their grave spacious and fill it with light.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
TransliterationAllāhummaghfir lahū warḥamhu wa `āfihī wa`fu `anhu, wa akrim nuzulahū wa wassi` mudkhalahū, waghsilhu bil-mā'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihī minal-khaṭāyā kamā naqqaytath-thawbal-abyaḍa minad-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhul-jannata wa a`idhhu min `adhābil-qabr.
EnglishO Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him. Honour his arrival and make his resting place spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave.
Roman UrduAe Allah, ise bakhsh de, is par reham farma, ise aafiyat de aur ise maaf farma. Is ki mehmaani izzat wali kar aur is ki qabr ko kushada kar de. Ise paani, barf aur olon se dho de, aur ise gunahon se aise paak kar de jaise safed kapda mail se paak kiya jata hai. Ise is ke ghar se behtar ghar, is ke ghar walon se behtar ghar wale aur is ke jode se behtar joda ata farma. Ise jannat mein daakhil farma aur qabr ke azaab se bacha.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنا وَمَيِّتِنا، وَشاهِدِنا وَغائِبِنا ، وَصَغيرِنا وَكَبيرِنا ، وَذَكَرِنا وَأُنْثانا . اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلى الإِسْلام ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلى الإِيمان ، اللَّهُمَّ لا تَحْرِمْنا أَجْرَه ، وَلا تُضِلَّنا بَعْدَه
TransliterationAllāhummaghfir liḥayyinā wa mayyitinā, wa shāhidinā wa ghā'ibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allāhumma man aḥyaytahū minnā fa-aḥyihī `alal-islām, wa man tawaffaytahū minnā fatawaffahū `alal-īmān. Allāhumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahū wa lā tuḍillanā ba`dah.
EnglishO Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep them alive upon Islam, and whoever of us You take, take them upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of the reward for (patience over) him, and do not let us go astray after him.

TransliterationAllāhumma inna (name) fī dhimmatik wa ḥabli jiwārik, faqihi min fitnatil-qabri wa `adhābin-nār, wa anta ahlul-wafā'i wal-ḥaqq, faghfir lahū warḥamh, innaka antal-ghafūrur-raḥīm.
EnglishO Allah, (name) is under Your protection and in Your care, so save them from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You always keep Your promise and You are the Truth, so forgive them and have mercy on them. You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Roman UrduAe Allah, (naam) Teri zimmedari aur Teri panah mein hai, pas ise qabr ke fitne aur aag ke azaab se bacha. Tu waada poora karne wala aur haq wala hai, pas ise bakhsh de aur is par reham farma. Beshak Tu bakhshne wala, reham karne wala hai.
اللَّهُمَّ عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ أَمَتِك، احْتاجَ إِلى رَحْمَتِك، وَأَنْتَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْ عَذابِه، إِنْ كانَ مُحْسِناً فَزِدْ في حَسَناتِه، وَإِنْ كانَ مُسيئاً فَتَجاوَزْ عَنْه
TransliterationAllāhumma `abduka wabnu amatik, iḥtāja ilā raḥmatik, wa anta ghaniyyun `an `adhābih, in kāna muḥsinan fazid fī ḥasanātih, wa in kāna musī'an fatajāwaz `anh.
EnglishO Allah, Your servant, the son of Your maidservant, needs Your mercy, and You have no need to punish him. If he did good, increase his good deeds, and if he did wrong, overlook it.
Roman UrduAe Allah, Tera banda aur Teri bandi ka beta Teri rehmat ka mohtaaj hai, aur Tu ise azaab dene se be-niyaz hai. Agar yeh neki karne wala tha to is ki nekiyon mein izafa farma, aur agar ghalti karne wala tha to is se dar-guzar farma.

EnglishO Allah, forgive him. O Allah, make him firm. After a burial the Prophet, peace be upon him, would stand and tell the people to ask forgiveness for their brother and ask Allah to make him firm, for he is now being questioned.
