The Noorani Qaida is the most widely used beginner book for learning to read the Quran. It teaches Arabic reading in a fixed order, so each new lesson uses what came before. Here is what each stage covers and how to help a child at home.
The Stages of the Noorani Qaida
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Single letters | Recognising the 29 letters and their correct sounds |
| Joined letters | How letters connect and change shape inside words |
| Huroof Muqatta'at | The separate letters that open some surahs, such as الم |
| Harakat | Fatha, kasra and damma (short vowels) |
| Tanween | Double vowels that add a noon sound |
| Standing harakat | Standing fatha, kasra and damma that lengthen the sound |
| Madd and leen letters | Long vowels and soft letters |
| Sukoon | Letters with no vowel, joined to the one before |
| Shaddah | Doubled letters, including shaddah after sukoon |
| Practice exercises | Reading real Quranic words and short verses |
The exact lesson numbers differ slightly between editions, but the order of skills is the same.
How Long Does the Noorani Qaida Take?
With short classes 4 to 5 days a week, many children finish in about 4 to 8 months. Adults often finish sooner because they understand the rules quickly. Regular practice matters more than long lessons.
How Parents Can Help at Home
- Practise for 10 minutes every day rather than one long session
- Listen to your child read the last lesson before the next class
- Praise effort, not only speed
- Keep the same time each day so it becomes a habit
