The Basics

What Is Tajweed and Why Does It Matter?

Tajweed comes from an Arabic root meaning to make something better. In recitation it means giving every letter its right: the correct point of articulation (makhraj), its qualities (sifaat) and the rules that apply when letters meet.

Meaning can change with pronunciation

Some Arabic letters sound close to each other. Mixing them up can change the meaning of a word, which is why Tajweed is taught with such care.

Beauty and confidence in salah

Students who learn Tajweed recite with more confidence in prayer and enjoy listening to and reciting the Quran more.
